London Exhibition opens tonight....

I have this photo from my book out later in the year exhibiting in a group show in London tonight. From the looks of it I'm in good company! Some heavy hitters on the roster here... Labyrinth Photographic Printing will proudly mark its first anniversary of trading with their exhibition ‘A Year In Development’, dedicated to celebrating the continuance and diversity of analogue photography and traditional methods of print.

Founded by John McCarthy, Cosimo d’Aprano and Jeremy Ramsden, Labyrinth Photographic is a traditional film-based darkroom dedicated to the craft of fine printing. Their aim is not only to preserve printing skills but also developing new and bespoke methods to suit their clients’ creative requirements.

The salon-style show will pay tribute to the varied work of 50 of Labyrinth’s talented clients, displaying a selection of beautifully hand-printed photographs shot solely using film since the birth of Labyrinth a year ago.

I heard the sad news yesterday that an old friend from down under, Todd webster had passed away. He will be missed by all and remembered an amazing character who faced the world with open arms, a friendly smile and the nicest frontside ollie in the business... Thanks for looking after a young wide-eyed Dubliner lost in the lad of Oz. These photos of Todd are taken from the 2nd issue of Killing Time, a skate zine I made with my friend Bruce back in the days before blogs and mega-pretzel cameras. RIP mate. Myself and stylist/homie Aisling Farinella were commissioned by the nice folk at G.H Mumm Champagne to create and curate an exhibition which explores the links between fashion and architecture. We are finished shooting and the show is being printed as we speak by sound lads Jim and Ed in Inspirational Arts. Here is the teaser video from the Format Perspective film by Phil Evans that premieres in Berlin this July. Carhartt are also making what looks to be a really nice book in conjunction with the documentary. Was away shooting in London all weekend and managed to fit in loads of personal work, two birthday parties, two random moments of bumping into old friends in weird unlikely places, 1 death metal gig and I also got shoot a portrait with Irish actor Cillian Murphy who was as sound as they come.

Format Perspective is a film that explores the work, lives and opinions of six European skate photographers. The film showcases the photography of Nils Svensson (Malmö), Stuart Robinson (Belfast), Alex Irvine (London), Richard Gilligan (Dublin), Bertrand Trichet (Barcelona-Tokyo) and Sergej Vutuc (Heilbronn), while also giving us an insight into the different approaches used by this diverse line-up of photographers. Filmed completely on super 8 film, this project gives a behind-the-scenes look at the skating that these guys like to shoot, as well as the resulting photos that emerge from these sessions.

Due for release in summer 2011.

It was edited by one of my favorite humans of all time, Fergal Brennan (www.mynameisfergal.com), the song is by Katie Kim (http://www.myspace.com/dancekatiekimdance) and the titles were done by brethren Conor & David (www.conoranddavid.com). On a random tip, every time I type the word "titles" and read back over it to check my spelling i always think I wrote "titties". Maybe it's time for bed now...

When I went for my interview to get onto the Documentary Photography degree in Newport my flight was booked by Mam in a travel agents on Abbey Street. Booking a flight online was still unheard of back then. The day before I was due to travel I got beaten up and had a tenner stolen from my pocket on my way home to my parents house from the Blanchardstown centre where I had walked especially to buy a copy of Thrasher magazine for my big day trip to Wales. So I arrived in Newport, with a split lip, a grazed face and a few bruises. I showed my portfolio to Clive Landen and a quiet German student called Tobias. They asked me some questions about my work and what photography I liked and then on my way out Clive asked me what had happened my face. I explained the story to them and a few weeks later received a letter in the post offering me a place on the course. I was never sure if they actually liked my work or if they just felt sorry for me because I looked such a state? Either way I got in and I couldn't have been happier. Turns out that the Tobias who interviewed me has gone on to make some incredible work which I discovered last Thursday in his book "Story/No Story" published by Hatje Cantz. Hunt it down and get inspired.

"Rat's Dad" - Burnside. 2004.

Rat was a skater I met briefly during the time I spent shooting a documentary project in Burnside. He was on a restraining order and had one of those tracker devices on his ankles which he seemed really proud of. His Dad worked as a painter in the area and would often stop by the park on his way home after a hard days graft. I had wanted to shoot a portrait of him for ages and this was the only night i shot with him. He seemed like an good, honest, hard working man. The portrait I shot ended up being one of my favorite photos from the whole project.

It's not that common in rural Ireland that you just happen to stumble upon a fully fledged handrail session in a small schoolyard in deepest darkest Wicklow. Myself and the ox were driving by to check out the new Arklow concrete park a while back when in the corner of my eye I thought I spotted a blondie lad attacking this rail.... We pulled over and turns out there were about 10 lads fully going for it on this beast. Goodtimes.

Brian Anderson is definitely in my top 5 skateboarders of all time and now thanks to Paddy O'Dell who does the "Epiclylater'd" shows on VBS.tv the world can finally see an insight into how this humble character rose from an unknown small-town kid to the highly regarded pro skater he is today. I was lucky enough to meet him a few years ago at a competition in Switzerland I was shooting for Sidewalk Magazine and I got to have a brief chat with him - turns out his granny is from Galway. Who knows, you may spot him 360 flipping over some crusty playing the bongo's on Eyre Square someday soon?

"Harry Callahan's technical photographic method was to go out almost every morning, walk the city he lived in and take numerous pictures. He then spent almost every afternoon making proof prints of that day's best negatives. Yet, for all his photographic acitivity, Callahan, at his own estimation, produced no more than half a dozen final images a year..." I find this fascinating/inspiring/confusing. What a legend? I've been a huge Harry Callahan fan for years now so just wanted to let the world know about this mans magic.

foto8 magazine is a thing of beauty - featuring amazing photography/stories/layouts and more. go subscribe and be inspired. these are good people doing great work... heres a spread i did for them a few years back. i remember i had their address on a scrap of paper and i turned up at their office by oxford circus with a box of prints under my arm. they were a bit weirded out by the fact that i had never phoned ahead to arrange a meeting, but the invited me in looked at my prints and ran this article.

‘Time/line’ is an exhibition of documentary photographs about skateboarding in Ireland by Richard Gilligan. Through a mixture of portraiture, action and small everyday moments ‘Time/line’ gives an insight into life as skateboarder in Ireland from the inside out. Shot over the past 14 years, this show is a visual journey of one photographers view of life both on and off his board.

On the opening night there will also be a book launch of a limited edition publication to go with the show.
For €12 own a piece of Irish skate history (only 200 printed).

The exhibition will open Tuesday 3rd of November at PLANE/SITE Gallery on Lad Lane, Dublin 2 at 7pm.
Come along and bring your board if you are over 18 to shred shaggy's new mini-ramp in the gallery space.
